COMPLETE GUIDE TO G. I. JOE: A REAL AMERICAN HERO

1993 (Series 12)

Selected Figures from 1993

Overview:

Once again the year started early, with the first wave of carded figures on store shelves well before Christmas 1992. In a year's time, there would be over one hundred new figures, three-quarters of which were repaints or new versions of older figures. This was the largest release of Joe toys ever. By this point, bright colors, giant working weapons, and macho-sounding filecards were the order of the day, and much of the G. I. Joe line had moved beyond conventional warfare. Among the innovations of 1993 were collector's cards with live-action photos, and mail-in offers that asked for proofs of purchase (UPC symbols) rather than Flag Points. Instead of carrying their own unique weapons, most figures came with four or five repaints of previously issued accessories, and backpacks became quite rare. Figures were generally numbered this year within their respective teams (e.g., Bazooka was # 1, Cross-Country was # 2, etc.).

Almost all of the previous year's figures were partially or completely repainted as part of Battle Corps, the new name for Joes not members of any special team. The Ninja Force continued to expand its team, while the Eco-Warriors and D.E.F. troops were inserted into the main Battle Corps line, apparently as a last-minute decision. A new concept was the Mega-Marines, who came with moldable Bio-Armor (similar to Play-Doh), and whose enemies included Mega-Monsters, mutant Cobras who no longer bore any resemblance to humans. Battles in space went full-scale with the Star Brigade, which just happened to include some of the most important Joe and Cobra leaders. Some of these were larger, Armor-Tech figures which were less articulated but closer to the size of other popular toy lines. One of the most controversial moves by Hasbro came this year, when Kirk Bozigian noted his son's and nephews' enthusiasm for the video game "Street Fighter" and the similarity of its characters to G. I. Joe. Hasbro licensed two lines of figures under the title Capcom Street Fighter II. The first was a group of 12-inch figures for the Hall of Fame line, which was growing by leaps and bounds; the second consisted of 3 3/4-inch figures and vehicles, primarily made from existing Joe and Cobra molds. There was also a Dino-Hunter Playset to capitalize on the success of that year's Jurassic Park movie. Mail-in-exclusive repaints were also numerous this year, and they included a personalized Cobra figure similar to the Steel Brigade trooper released six years earlier.

The move away from a strictly military story was also evident in the ninja-dominated plotline of the comics, with half the year devoted to the only-superficially-apparent defection of Scarlett to Cobra, which turned out to be only a buildup to another crossover between G. I. Joe and the Transformers to prop up the struggling TF Generation 2 comics and toys.

While traditional fans may criticize this year's releases for the non-military look and the utter weirdness of some of the new lines and characters, 1993's G. I. Joe bore all the marks of a strong, successful toy line. The aggressive size of the toy line and the manifest originality of this year's concepts, balance out the various weaknesses (especially when compared with the attempt to save the struggling Transformers line with "Generation 2"). The new Joes were indeed appealing to the children of the early 1990s, who were enamored with the colorful, effects-laden toys in much the same way an earlier generation had been drawn to Joe's realism and articulation. The fact that all the trends of 1993 continued into the next year suggests that, at least from a marketing standpoint, Hasbro was doing "the right thing" with its G. I. Joe toy line.

You might say this good 'ol country boy was born to drive big things that run on diesel. And when you hear his "rebel yell," and see the Southern flag on the back of his jacket flash by, you'll know he is on his way to do some serious Cobra butt kicking. Bazooka might be a wildman behind the wheel of his Blockbuster, but Cross-Country will drive that Battle Wagon over anything that gets in his way, especially if it has the Cobra insignia on it!

Filecard Information: When the going gets rough, that's when the Marine Corps gets sent in. The same is true for G. I. Joe. When his buddies have their backs against the wall, that's when GUNG-HO moves in to do some heavy butt-kicking. The other G. I. Joes claim Gung-Ho is the scariest, craziest jar-head who ever kicked and clawed his way out of the Corps' ultimate hole in the swamp—Parris Island! Motto: "Just give me an M-16 and a sharp icicle and I'll fight 'till I freeze!"
Filecard Information: ICEBERG is one of the best cold weather specialists on the planet. Not just because he has the knowledge and ability to endure freezing temperatures, but because he actually ENJOYS the bitter cold and survives it with a smile even in the chill of battle. He loves to thrash Cobra (and the mountain slopes) on his jet-powered snowboard and he knows everything about arctic survival, including fortifying his own igloo by hacking and shaping huge blocks of ice with his razor-edged machete.
Versions: 1. 1986 2. 1993 (Battle Corps) 3. 1997 (3-Pack)
Variations: The G. I. Joe logo on the snowboard faces left on some and right on others.

Filecard Information: Leatherneck was the hardest gunny that ever slogged through the mud of camp Lejeune. Before that, he was the toughest drill sergeant on Parris Island. Men that have gone through his training say they would rather crawl over broken glass than be on his bad side. He demands countless push-ups for mistakes and enjoys leading 30 mile hikes through hot and humid Parris Island swamps. He insists he is a tough disciplinarian because he wants his soldiers to be prepared for the worst, and when you have dealt with Cobra as often as he has, you come to expect the worst.

Motto: "I always teach three things: be tough, be dedicated, and kick Cobra butt!"
Appearance: yellow hat; red hair and beard; light blue short-sleeved shirt with orange straps and wristbands; black gloves; light blue and yellow splotched pants with orange belt and black boots.

Filecard Information: OUTBACK was an instructor at G. I. Joe's Survival School and the Jungle Warfare Training Center. He has had extensive experience in Central America and may or may not have participated in clandestine operations in the Middle East. Most people are intimidated by wilderness and feel uncomfortable in an area where there is no sign of human life for miles. Not Outback! He believes in being part of his environment, not its adversary! He is well aware of the dangers surrounding him in a strange jungle or desolate wilderness and he respects those dangers, which is why he has never been caught off guard.
Versions: 1. 1987
2. 1988 (Night Force)

Filecard Information: What can you say about a guy who totes a 134 pound machine gun as his personal weapon and who can whip up a mean crawdad stew? Not much. You just stay out of his field of fire, and ask for seconds. ROADBLOCK is the man who lays down the covering fire with his heavy machine gun. That means he makes the enemy keep their heads down when the G. I. Joes are advancing, as well as making them think twice about giving chase when the G. I. Joes are withdrawing! He usually leads his squad into battle while riding the G. I. Joe Patriot.

Filecard Information: SNOW STORM was recruited for the G. I. Joe team after COLONEL COURAGE saw him defeat an entire band of hostile revolutionaries who were trying to infiltrate a peaceful Caribbean village. Snow Storm accepted the Joe's offer but disliked his first assignment: trying to stop Cobra Vipers from attacking a science station at the north pole. He wasn't afraid of the Vipers; he just hated the cold! Nevertheless, he accomplished this frigid mission (and many others) with great success. After being given a customized, high-tech thermal suit to wear, he agreed to stay in the Arctic where he functions so well at pulverizing Cobra!

Filecard Information: WET-SUIT has been characterized as being "175 pounds of mean on the hoof" and is definitely not known for his social graces. He is not the type who goes over very well at the Chaplain Assistants' Social Tea, but he is exactly the dude you want behind you when you run into a gaggle of Cobra EELS in a shallow mine field. Extensive physical and terrorist training programs are standard for these vicious Vipers and they soon become skilled villains and dangerously full of hate. Accessories: bright green assault rifle (92 Firefly's NA-55); black blade launcher (92 Firefly's) with bright green rip cord; bright green blade (92 Firefly's); black figure stand.
Filecard Information: FIREFLY has been blowing things up for Cobra since COBRA COMMANDER first donned his hood and opened up for business. Since that time, Cobra has expanded to include entire battalions of bomb-planters, arsonists, and booby-trappers, but Cobra Commander still keeps contacting Firefly, the "Rembrandt of plastic explosives," when a job needs precision bombing. Firefly constructs bombs protected by cross-wired, anti-tampering switches so complex that they are impossible to defuse. No building, or mission, is too tough for Firefly.

This allows them to fire extremely accurate Tail-Biter missiles at G. I. Joe aircraft with absolute impunity! These are dedicated and motivated troopers. To maintain maximum level of effectiveness, Flak-Vipers spend long hours everyday practicing simulated missile engagements using a program cartridge that plugs into their helmets. It would be like playing a portable video game for 10 hours straight! These guys get a kick out of roaming the battlefield in the Cobra Parasite while "picking off" incoming enemy aircraft.

When they spot a G. I. Joe vehicle (especially a nice Battle Wagon, Patriot, or Mudbuster) they sit perfectly still, lining up the tracker sights on target to guide their projectile. Then they try to squeeze off one of their hand-held rockets knowing they've only got one shot because if they miss, there isn't a G. I. Joe worth his salt who'll let that poor fool try for seconds!

He is believed to conduct all field intelligence and covert operations for Cobra. All investigations into his origin and the structure of his NIGHT CREEPERS have run into dead ends. Sources suspect he molds them with the scruples of a Wall Street stock manipulator, the lethal skills of a master martial artist, and the stealthy talents of a cat burglar; then arms them with a sophisticated anti-detection and weapons technology.

Banzai trained in the hostile mountain climate of Tibet where he perfected his "suzushi slam" and gained discipline and inspiration from a spiritual ninja master livng in seclusion. Having mastered the use of nunchakus along with his lethal slam technique, he is surely considered"double the trouble" by Cobra!

She graduated summa cum laude from two Ivy League universities and went on to excel in training courses at all four branches of the armed forces. Cobra often mistakes her for just a pretty face rather than a member of G. I. Joe's elite Ninja Force, which makes her perfect for undercover missions. She is a great friend to each of the Joes, especially SNAKE-EYES, and a deadly enemy to Cobra.

Filecard Information: SNAKE-EYES excelled in Long Range Recon Patrols and high-risk covert missions in Southeast Asia. He went through basic training at Fort Benning and became the top obstacle course/endurance runner in his class. His athletic ability led him to compete in marathons across the globe. Motto: "A real G. I. Joe should be on the front lines with his men, which is where you'll find me!"
Appearance: beige helmet with goggles; brown hair; beige short-sleeved jacket with brown camouflage; brown straps; beige pants with brown camouflage; brown holster and boots.

Filecard Information: DUKE is a natural leader, and nobody knows that better than his men. He passed up an officer's commission because he wanted to stay where the action was on the front lines, not twiddling his thumbs back at some fancy officer's club. Instead of sitting around talking with a bunch of boring brass, he'd rather split some K-rations with a platoon of grunts in a battlefield foxhole. He's a firm believer in discipline and the "no pain, no gain" work ethic. His men may complain from time to time about sore muscles, but when the bullets start to fly, you can bet every one of them thanks Duke for the rigorous training he put them through.

When the call is given to charge, he's the one shouting it from the front. His strategies on the battlefield have twice earned him the Medal of Valor and countless decorations as he carries on his family's proud military tradition.

Filecard Information: KEEL-HAUL became a legend flying Phantom F-4's, but his career really "took off" when he became the first aircraft carrier captain to double as a fighter pilot. His carrier had come under a massive Cobra attack and he needed to get more planes in the air if the ship—and its crew—was to survive. Since there were no more pilots available, Keel-Haul jumped into a Ghoststriker X-16 jet and roared off the flight deck with all guns blazing. With the added firepower and inspiration he brought to the skies, the Joes won the battle minutes later. According to Keel-Haul, no enemy is too great a threat that a few air-to-ground heat-seeking missiles won't cure!

He believes in being part of his environment, not its adversary! He is well aware of the dangers surrounding him in a strange jungle or desolate wilderness and he respects those dangers, which is why he has never been caught off guard.

Filecard Information: The original G. I. Joe helicopter pilot, WILD BILL is also an expert tracker and can function on the ground as well as any expert infantry scout. He adapts the hunting skills he learned as a boy whenever he's tracking the enemy in "his own backyard." As he says: "Sneaking up on a Cobra is a sight easier than sneaking up on most critters because Cobras smell distinctively bad, so their scent is easily picked up." Even DUKE admits they are some of the toughest Cobra soldiers he's ever had the displeasure of dealing with, especially when they are armed with their weapon of choice: modified AK-47 assault rifles! They're very good at being very bad, and have participated at all levels of Cobra operations from industrial espionage to full-scale global attacks. COBRA COMMANDER considers them his top officers, and feels safe having them swear their allegiance strictly to him. For if they were to ever turn against him, they would prove to be his second most feared enemy, next to the Joes, of course!

Although intelligence commands for the Monsters are issued by DR.MINDBENDER or through his CYBER-VIPERS, it's the skilled tactics and "fight to the fiinish" attitude of the Mega-Vipers that lead the Monsters on their attack missions. Doing the dirty work, with or without the Mega-Monsters, is what the Mega-Vipers do best!

Accessories: red spring missile launcher (new, with black pole-like handle); black missile (new, with thick trapezoidal fins).
Filecard Information: BIO-VIPERS were once a battalion of ordinary COBRA EELS, until COBRA COMMANDER ordered them to "volunteer" for DR. MINDBENDER's experiment in DNA alteration. Dr. Mindbender bio-genetically crossed the Eels with an assortment of the ocean's deadliest predators, turning them into ferocious Mega-Monsters that stink like low tide! They have sandpaper skin like a shark, razor-sharp piranha teeth, and the strength and tentacles of giant squid! They became so violently out of control, Mindbender had to add computer integrated body & brain implants to control them! Now, when Cobra Commander needs vicious reinforcements, he calls the Bio-Vipers up from the depths and unleashes them on G. I. Joe. When they're not at work for Cobra, Bio-Vipers enjoy polluting the ocean, disrupting vital shipping lanes, and hunting innocent sea life! They must be stopped! But until they are, DON'T GO SWIMMING ALONE!!!!

Monstro-ViperItem # 6073Mega-Monsters Carded Assortment
Mega-MonsterPrimary MOS: Bio-Genetic Mega-Marine Hunter
Secondary MOS: Deforestation / Wildlife Destruction
Appearance: black wolf-like monster with yellow eyes and fur on shoulders, chest, wrists, and feet; gold left glove; orange shorts.
Accessories: gold experimental projectile weapon (new, with hose and pole-like handle); gold flail (new, with spiked ball).
Filecard Information: MONSTRO-VIPERS were once a team of ordinary Cobra Range Vipers, until COBRA COMMANDER ordered them to "volunteer" for an experiment in DNA alteration. The experiment was run by DR. MINDBENDER who bio-genetically crossed the Vipers with rabid werewolves, giant "Bigfoot" creatures, and the most gruesome grizzly bears he could find. The horrid fusion process made them 1/4 man and 3/4 monster—the most brutal battle beasts to ever stalk the earth! The only way to tame their terror was to implant computer controlled processors in their bodies and minds, and while he was at it, Dr. Mindbender also gave them inner body chambers that process exploding gut bombs! Their keen sense of smell when stalking prey can detect G. I. Joes for miles, so all troops have been ordered to stay alert with their trigger fingers ready! The next time you're in the woods and you hear a twig snap, don't look back . . .RUN!!!!
