COMPLETE GUIDE TO G. I. JOE: A REAL AMERICAN HERO

2000 (Series 16)

NOTE: Sorry about the harsh color, but this is what Hasbro chose for their filecard backgrounds this year!

2000 Figures

Overview:

Hasbro-Kenner, always tight-lipped about upcoming projects, ended 1998 with no announced plans for more G. I. Joe toys. Early on, there was mention that if the 1998 series performed well, the next year they might put the line into general release. A new G. I. Joe comic book series was also discussed. For a number of reasons, both ideas fell through, and perhaps this was fortuitous: on May 3, 1999, the toy world was taken by storm with the release of Star Wars: Episode I merchandise (much of it produced by Hasbro-Kenner). The new Star Wars movie was in theatres all summer and was re-released just before Christmas, so other toy lines had little opportunity to compete. (The 12-inch Joes were targeted at adults, so their sales did not suffer.) By spring 2000, however, the fever had passed, and the overproduced Star Wars toys were soon sitting on clearance racks. That summer, Hasbro-Kenner announced plans to release G. I. Joe figure two-packs and a few vehicles. This time, the toys would not be Toys 'R Us exclusives, and they were more specifically targeted at collectors; a "Special Collector's Edition" seal appeared on the new packaging. The first wave of what was dubbed the Real American Hero Collection, ten new figures began appearing in October/November, but the vehicles did not show up in some areas until after Christmas. This year's figures and vehicles were again repaints, with two new characters, Chameleon and Rip It. The MOBAT sold in 1998 was re-released unchanged but with the new 2000 packaging. Due to expired copyrights, Hawk was renamed Tomahawk, and the Dragonfly was dubbed the Locust. The innovation this year was to use paint wiping, a process in which a painted figure is dipped in a different colored paint (usually black); the new paint is quickly wiped off, but traces remain on the figure. Filecards also got a new look, with character art replaced by a photo of the figure. Fan reaction to these releases has been very positive, and many were impressed with the attention to detail, especially to vehicles and packaging. However, the paint wipes ignited a controversy when they proved unpopular with many collectors, most prominently Thomas Wheeler, who had helped revive the Joe line in 1997.

"Wave 1" Carded Joes

ChameleonItem # 57731-1Regular 2-Pack Assortment
Cobra Intelligence Officer
File Name: (CLASSIFIED)Primary MOS: Intelligence
POB: (CLASSIFIED)Secondary MOS: Computer Technologies
Appearance: long black hair; glasses; black plated armor suit with red trim; black gloves and thigh-high boots; red Cobra insignia on chest.
Accessories: black backpack (84 Baroness's); black laser rifle (84 Baroness's); black walkie-talkie (84 Firefly's); black figure stand.
Filecard Information: The adopted daughter of French revolutionaries, Chameleon traced her lineage and discovered she was the illegitimate half sister of Baroness, COBRA's top intelligence officer. When a COBRA night attack left Baroness severely burned and in need of extensive facial plastic surgery, Chameleon seized the opportunity to present herself to the G. I. Joe team in hopes of thwarting the evil actions of her spoiled sister and her aligned COBRA forces. Chameleon underwent a plastic surgery process that mirrored her half sister's new appearance and led a kidnap mission to capture the Baroness, who is now incarcerated in a federal penitentiary in Duluth. Acting as a secret agent for the G. I. Joes, Chameleon has assumed the role of Baroness in the COBRA legions, secretly sabotaging their missions and foiling their efforts to take over the world.

Communications ExpertE-4 (Army corporal)
File Name: Corp. Jack S. MorelliPrimary MOS: Radio Telecommunications
POB: Eugene, ORSecondary MOS: Infantry

Accessories: black backpack (91 Dusty's MAT-49) with stock; black walkie-talkie (84 Firefly's); black figure stand.
Filecard Information: Dial Tone served as a telecommunications expert for years before volunteering for duty with the G. I. Joe team. He can tune in on enemy transmitter frequencies, locate their coordinates, then attack with pinpoint accuracy. An expert electronics repairman, he also holds the record for setting up a mobile satellite transmitter under battlefield conditions in less than three minutes. Dial Tone's main responsibility is to stay in touch with H.Q. and get the team to the correct extraction site. In environments where there is no radio contact, no reinforcements or evacuation, you're just a sitting duck. That's not a problem for Dial Tone, since he always delivers the message loud and clear.
Here's a guy that has to man the radio and be part of a firefight, in a place where you can't see ten feet in front of you. It takes a soldier with keen instinct and ability. Lucky for us—he has both.

He took Basic at Fort Bliss, Texas and loved every minute of it.
It's not enough nowadays to have a rapid-reaction force respond instantaneously to explosive situations in far flung corners of the globe. That force must be capable of surviving in a diverse array of hostile environments to accomplish its objectives. If that means having one expert for every type of environment on every team to take on survival responsibilities on that terrain, then so be it. Qualified expert: M-16, M-14, M-60.

LawItem # 57729-2Regular 2-Pack Assortment
M.P.E-4 (Army corporal)
File Name: Corp. Christopher M. LavignePrimary MOS: Military Police

Filecard Information: Law & Order walked a beat in Houston's Fifth Ward for two years before Law decided that there must be a more fulfilling way to be a cop, so he and his canine "Order" enlisted for the Military Police. Law is a trained dog handler with a natural affinity for animals. He is also Airborne qualified.
M.P.'s are responsible for the security of an installation. That may sound like a cushy job if all they are guarding is a garrison full of clerks, cooks, and accountants, but it's another matter altogether when they're acting as the defensive line for an elite unit like the G. I. Joes. The bad guys are going to send in the best they have and that's not good enough to get past Law & Order. You don't want to mess with him and that dog of his. Chew your leg right off, he will. After that, you still have to deal with the dog!

Undertow will swim through ANYTHING! These guys makes leeches look friendly! It's almost impossible to defeat him in his own environment! If we have to take him on his own backyard, we first have to get tetanus booster shots before we move out for action. The best defense against this slime-swimmer is to keep a safe distance and throw grenades from behind a well fortified enclosure.

LampreyItem # 57717boxed with Man-O-War
Amphibious Assault Trooper
Appearance: blue mask with silver faceplate; silver jacket with blue life jacket and gloves; silver pants with red belts; blue shoes; black paint mask.
Accessories: none.
Filecard Information: LAMPREYS are underwater demolitions specialists of the COBRA legions who protect and defend all of COBRA's coastal and underwater outposts, including COBRA Island. Because of their vital importance in the COBRA legions, they arey hand-picked, highly trained, and formidably equipped. Their rigorous training program takes place in warm, shark and pirate infested waters of tropical islands, and the dark, frigid depths of the Arctic Circle. Lampreys are known to operate the Man-O-War submarine for underwater demolition missions and coastal attacks on the shores of G. I. Joe inhabited areas.
The G. I. Joe choppers can usually outshoot and outmaneuver anything in the water. But if the Man-O-War sub uses its long range, surface cruising torpedoes, Wild Bill better have had that second cup of coffee to stay on his toes! It makes you wonder who really has the advantage.

Rip ItItem # 57758boxed with HISS III
Heavy Equipment Operator
File Name: Fredd T. Booth IIIPrimary MOS: Heavy Equipment Operator
POB: Fall River, MABranch: COBRA OPERATIVE
Appearance: blue helmet with black goggles and red face mask; blue shirt with black chest panel and red insignia on chest; red wristbands and black thigh-high segmented boots; red belt and blue pants.
Accessories: none.
Filecard Information: Knows only one thing . . . destroy or be destroyed, and he obviously lives for the former. Generally one to carry out orders, Rip It sometimes takes matters into his own hands by using the H.I.S.S. III to wage private battles of his own against G. I. Joe. Oddly enough, as part of the H.I.S.S. training, Rip It was required to master the game of golf. Through the strategies and movements of the game, with its winding courses and natural obstacles, Rip It learned how to analyze and negotiate a wide variety of similar battlefield problems. Cobra's only concern is when Rip It loses his patience—and temper—during training maneuvers and wraps his clubs around fellow trainees' necks. Lucky for the pros, Rip It won't be hitting the links on tour any time soon.
